Helmsley Walled Garden
Helmsley
North Yorkshire

The BCS National Display Garden is at Helmsley Walled Garden, which lies in the shadow of Helmsley Castle in Yorkshire. This magnificent 5 acre walled garden, on the edge of the Dales and near Rievaulx Abbey and Nunnington Hall, now has 150 clematis, cared for by BCS volunteers since October 1998, under the dedicated supervision of Garry Gaunt. Probably at its best from May to July, there will be some clematis in flower all the year round. In addition to a wide general range of clematis, two specific collections are being established - the Magnus Johnson Collection, and the Vince Denny Collection.

The garden is open to the public from April to October, from 10.30am until 5.00pm. From November until March it is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 10.00am until 4.00pm. Members of the British Clematis Society are admitted free on production of a current membership card. Otherwise, admission costs £2 for adults, concessions £1, whilst children are admitted free. There is wheelchair access and there are cafe facilities. (Information correct Summer 2001)

The BCS display co-ordinator is Garry Gaunt, 5 Hildyard Close, Stokesley, Middlesbrough, TS9 5QE. Tel: +44 (0) 1642 713 318.
