One Etoile Violette has been on flower for tree weeks but the other one 20 yards away has only one flower open at the moment. Strange that the one that has flowered first is slightly more in shade than the single flowered one. Yet a Princess Dianna in full sun has been on flower for two weeks, but the East facing one very close to the fully flowering Etoile Violette does not even have a bud on yet. Most viticellas of 3 or 4 years age will have at least 10 stems in our garden. A 15 year old viticella species collected in Iran has more stems than I would wish to count, probably close on a hundred, as said they like our chalk soil.

I have seen C. sibirica growing in vertually pure acidic sand in Estonia, but replicating the conditions in our garden resulted in failure, possibly too warm for them here? Yet all other Atragenes cope with our soil, but possibly would do even better in acidic soil.

Cheers

Roy

On theother hand Cl. 'Abundance' do produce masses of shoots/stems.'Kermesina' do produce an abundance of flowers as well as 4-5 metreof growth along the fence. The Viticellas do well in the hot areashere, I think plants often handle Cold or Hot the same way. We arequite temperate here, close to the sea, the snow 50 km away, and200-300metre up when low.

Cheers Peer

Edited by yaku - 28 Jun 2010 at 12:20pm

Usually when I get plants they are grown in very rich compost and there is usually a lot of root damage. I have found that they do not survive the winter in a cold greenhouse if left in this compost. I usually wash off all the old compost cut away any black roots, dust with yellow sulphur and pot on into my open alpine mix, which is suitable for my collection of NZ clematis. I find growth seems to be slow when using this mix but the plants survive the winter. Do you think extra feed is required, stopping in August? When to prune? How to get more flowers?

Any info from anyone who grows this plant successfully would be most helpful.

My latest plant was obviously propogated in one of the jiffey bags, I have carefully removed this bag, as invarably I find that if left intact the crown of the plant rots over winter. The use of these bags or the rockwool prop cells may be an advantage to the grower, but for the gardener I find they are a nightmare as invarably they suck up too much moisture at the crown of the plant causing rot at this point.

Best wishes

Roy W Nunn
