In 2004 I visited Barry Fretwell's Peveril nursery and on telling him I liked Tibetana, he recommended a plant that he described as little known, which I duly bought. That plant was clematis Hatherly (called Hatherliensis in the Clematis Register). I planted it in my garden in 2005 and every year it has got better. I did some research on this plant and on Mr Fretwell's website he describes it as a seedling bred at Exeter University in the 1960s from a similar parentage as "Bill Mackenzie" namely orientalis x tangutica (it differs from Bill MacKenzie in that the stamens are not as dark). A couple of people from the university kept it going in their gardens and from this Mr Fretwell built up some stock. It is a wonderful plant and very floriferous. I am very glad that Mr Fretwell suggested it and I hope I too am helping it survive. I currently have a number of seedlings from it which I am hoping will flower this year (although of course there is no guarantee they will resemble the parent).
I thought I would share some photos of it that I have taken in my garden.

Some photos of Hatherly from this year. It only finished finally flowering about 2 weeks ago.
