As I am getting pushed for space in my garden, thoughts are turning to how close can I plant clems to each other. I have started to plant them 20" apart now. Is that too close or can I plant even closer? I guess it all depends on how vigorous the particular plants are. I dig 18" x 18" holes which i widen to about 26" for 2 plants

I have some clematis spaced 12-20" apart.  I'm certain this isn't ideal, but for the more vigorous ones, they compete better with each other than others seem to compete with stronger plants (elms, magnolias, loniceras).   In one area I have about 8 plants spaced like this against a wall, all viticellas/viornas, and they do well, though I keep them fertilized.
