Each year when I go on holiday , which is manly in August  I select a few cutting
from one of my plants . Usually from one that is getting a bit tatty or the lower
growth is becoming woody or out of the ground .   This year I chose to take
cuttings from C.Princess Diana , this  was the second week in August , they were put in my rooting compost and covered with a plastic bottle (with the
neck cut of ) obviously and a couple of holes in the base .  This was well watered and stood in a shallow plastic saucer , the lot was placed in a shady
place in the greenhouse .   On my return I was pleased that 6 out 11 cuttings
had rooted , and were firm in the compost , by now I have removed the
un-rooted ones and the rest have new growth on them .   I have been doing this for a few years now , I can not say that I have such success every year
but I always have a few rooted cuttings to replace my own plants or to give to
friends.  All my clematis are group 1 or 3 , I don't know if this would work with group 2 as I have never tried them .  Its more plants with not a lot of effort
so worth a try .
