I have had two separate plants of the above clematis at different times. They have each grown well, had hundreds of flowers just coming out, then the plant turns brown at the bottom and gradually this spreads all over the plant which then dies.

Does anyone have any advice on what is going on here and is it worth trying to grow a third?

They were each in well-drained soil and in sunny positions.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Mary,
You say it is in sun, but do you have any shade at the base as it does not particularly like warm roots.
One of its relatives (flammula) comes from the hotter more drier regions of Europe and too much wet (even in well drained soil) can still cause this plant to give up the ghost even when in growth.
With the wetter winters we now seem to be having I have noticed their are significantly more people losing this plant (recta and its forms are also struggling).
It may just come down to how good your drainage is, as you will be surprised how far the roots will go down.
If you want to try another one make sure you dig the deepest hole you can and fill with plenty of grit. Then provide shade at the base preferably with a stone slab as this is the perfect way to keep the roots and surrounding soil cool.
Kind regards
